iPod Plug-In Sets Music Free

Excerpt from Wired Magazine:

IPod users are raving about a plug-in that makes the Winamp digital jukebox a better way to manage the iPod than Apple's iTunes.

The plug-in, called ml_iPod, allows iPod users to bypass iTunes and manage music collections in Winamp instead. The iPod is supposed to work with iTunes only. A new version of the software was released Monday.

Podcast support in next version of iTunes

Excerpt:

At the Wall Street Journal's D Conference, Steve Jobs tonight showed ipodder-like features in the next release of iTunes, supposedly available within about 60 days. I was glad to see this, since the "architecture of participation" has been the only one of the big Web 2.0 themes that Apple had seemed to be missing. He was slightly dismissive of populist podcasting, describing it as "Wayne's World for radio", and celebrating the arrival of professional radio stations into the market, but nonetheless, he was very high on the podcasting phenomenon, and the excitement that millions of users have displayed about it. In the Q&A, Jason Calcanis of Weblogs, Inc. asked if there was any possibility of using the iTunes music store for paid podcasting. Jobs replied that for the moment they were only considering it as free content, but that he was open to looking into it.

PlayStation 3 worth waiting for, says Sony's CEO

Excerpt: - Sony may not beat Microsoft to the market with its next video game console, but the Japanese company said Monday it will trump the software giant with a better machine.

Ken Kutaragi, chief executive of Sony's game division, said the PlayStation 3 will have twice the processing power of Microsoft's Xbox 360 game console that goes on sale in the fall. He rattled off a barrage of statistics to prove his case, noting the Cell microprocessor in the PlayStation 3 would be 35 times more powerful than the chip in the current PlayStation 2.

Digital listening growing, radio slipping

Excerpt:
An increasing number of people are turning to computers or portable players for music, even though traditional radio still leads the competition, a recent market study has indicated.

In March 2005, approximately 77.2 million customers listened to music stored on a computer, up 22 percent from 63.2 million during the same month last year, according to a report from market researcher The NPD Group. The study also found that online radio stations had 53.5 million listeners this March, up from 45.3 million a year ago. Free streaming of music also saw gains, with a rise of 37 percent, to 46 million listeners.
